Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular anomaly. Many parents mistake Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma for a birthmark, but it is actually a benign tumor of a child’s blood vessels. Because the tumor is benign, it can continue to grow, but it will not spread throughout the body.

Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma can appear anywhere on the body, with the most common occurrences being found on the neck, head, stomach, back, arms, and legs. Some tumors will shrink on their own over time and fade away without the need of any treatment or intervention. Other tumors, however, can continue to grow and cause an array of problems. Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma is sometimes misdiagnosed as infantile hemangioma because of its similar appearance at first and where it is located. However, as they grow, Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma tumors begin to differ in appearance and complications.

Because Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma tumors are so rare, very few doctors have experience diagnosing and treating them. At the Vascular Birthmark Institute in New York, Dr. Milton Waner and his interdisciplinary team understand that effective treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis. Our practice is considered to be the go-to clinic for difficult cases. Many of our patients come to us having been originally misdiagnosed and, thus, have not received the appropriate treatment.
