At Vascular Birthmark Institute, our doctors, led by Dr. Waner and Dr. O, offer advanced laser treatments to address vascular birthmarks, red and pigmented lesions, vascular masses, and visible veins. With precision and expertise, we use the latest technology to reduce discoloration, improve skin texture, and deliver optimal cosmetic and medical outcomes.

What Are Laser Treatments?

Laser treatments use focused light energy to target and treat specific skin concerns without damaging surrounding tissue. At the Vascular Birthmark Institute, we use a range of lasers to address vascular birthmarks, red and pigmented lesions, abnormal veins, and scarring. Each laser is selected based on its wavelength, depth of penetration, and safety profile to match your condition. Whether you need treatment for a superficial lesion or a vascular mass, our doctors customize every procedure to achieve safe, natural-looking results.

Laser Treatments Can Treat:

  • Red vascular lesions such as hemangiomas and port-wine stains
  • Pigmented lesions and discoloration from birthmarks
  • Superficial and deep vascular malformations
  • Telangiectasias and broken capillaries
  • Unwanted veins on the face or body

How Laser Treatments Work

Laser treatments work through selective photothermolysis, a process in which specific wavelengths of laser light are absorbed by target chromophores, such as hemoglobin or melanin.

This allows the laser to treat abnormal blood vessels, pigmented tissue, or scars without damaging the surrounding skin. Our doctors select from a range of laser technologies to customize treatment based on the depth, type, and size of the lesion being treated.

Vascular Lesions

Vascular lesions, such as hemangiomas, port-wine stains, and telangiectasias, are treated using pulsed dye lasers (PDL) and diode lasers. These devices emit specific wavelengths that are absorbed by oxyhemoglobin in the blood vessels. The laser energy heats and collapses the targeted vessels, causing them to fade over time. Because the light targets only the blood vessels, the surrounding skin remains largely unaffected. Early treatment can improve skin texture and reduce the likelihood of long-term discoloration.

Vascular Masses

Vascular masses, including deeper or compound hemangiomas, require laser systems capable of penetrating below the surface of the skin. The Nd:YAG laser is used in these cases due to its longer wavelength and deeper tissue reach. This laser wavelength is absorbed by blood vessels within the mass, leading to controlled coagulation and shrinkage of the lesion. In some cases, the laser can be combined with medical or surgical therapies to enhance the results and reduce bulk without invasive procedures.

Facial/Body Veins

Unwanted facial or body veins, such as spider veins or deeper venous malformations, are treated using targeted laser wavelengths that are absorbed by hemoglobin. The Nd:YAG and diode lasers are particularly effective for these treatments due to their ability to reach superficial and deeper vessels. The laser causes thermal damage to the vein wall, prompting the vessel to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body. These treatments can significantly improve appearance and reduce discomfort associated with vascular irregularities.

Benefits of Laser Treatments:

  • Precisely targets abnormal blood vessels or pigmented tissue
  • Reduces redness, discoloration, and visible veins
  • Improves skin texture and appearance
  • Stimulates collagen production for smoother skin
  • Non-invasive or minimally invasive treatments
  • Suitable for both superficial and deeper lesions
  • Often requires little to no downtime

Your Laser Treatment Session

During your laser treatment, you’ll be made comfortable as your doctor evaluates the area to be treated. A cooling gel or device may be applied to protect your skin. The laser device will then deliver precise pulses of light to the targeted area. You may feel a warm or snapping sensation as the laser activates. Sessions typically last 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and depth of the lesion. Afterward, your doctor will provide aftercare instructions.

Recovery After Laser Treatments

After your laser treatment, you may experience mild redness, swelling, or a warm sensation in the treated area, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few hours to a few days. You should avoid sun exposure and follow your doctor’s skincare instructions to protect the treated skin. Depending on the type of laser used, downtime may vary, but most patients resume normal activities within a day.

Laser Treatment Results

You may see improvements within a few weeks of your laser treatment, with continued fading or smoothing as your skin heals and collagen production increases. Depending on the condition, multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results. The results can last months or even years, especially with proper skincare and sun protection. Your doctor will recommend a treatment plan, which may include periodic maintenance to sustain long-term improvements.
